Can Bale win the Ballon d'Or?
We are in the middle of the international break, and a few nations have already grabbed the headlines in the 2016 Euro qualifiers. One such nation is Wales, as they won and drew their two games to put themselves within touching distance of Euro qualification. Real Madrid's Gareth Bale has, unsurprisingly, been their star player. The question in this week's Comments Below is whether, if Wales 'do a Greece' and win the Euros next year, Gareth Bale would win the Ballon d'Or.Though Messi and Ronaldo are the perennial kings of the Ballon d'Or, the notion of Bale winning it is not as bizarre or far-fetched as it may first seem. Bale has started this season better than Ronaldo and arguably better than Messi too. Having scored 2 goals for Real Madrid and 1 for Wales (which earned them a crucial win over Cyprus), Bale is undeniably in-form and has been crucial in placing Wales on the brink of qualifying for a major tournament for the first time in 57 years. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has yet to score this season, failing to net in none of the three games. It is early, obviously, but Bale has started this season with a real intent. It is unlikely that he will better the scoring totals of Messi or Ronaldo in the next few seasons, but Bale could become the Ballon d'Or frontrunner next season if he performs heroics with Wales next year. Both Ronaldo and Messi have failed to win the World Cup and their respective continental cups with their country. If Bale manages this feat next year at the Euros France with Wales and has a solid year with Real Madrid, then Bale will almost certainly be one of the favourites for the coveted award in 2017.
