MLS: back and more unpredictable than ever | Case of the Mondays
Here's who's having the worst Case of the Mondays this morning.
There’s nothing like wildly speculating about the outcome of a season based on the first game of the season!2017 MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canada Cup-winning Toronto FC stumbled in their first match, losing 2-0 to the Columbus Crew at home. With a performance like that, Liga MX champions Tigres are going to give them quite a tough time in the next round of the CONCACAF Champions League this week and next — and that’s about as far as we’ll speculate on them after 90 minutes.
Atlanta United were another club with higher hopes pinned on them than their first result, a 4-0 loss away to Houston, belied.Heading into the season, there were questions about how Atlanta’s defense would hold up. But nobody expected that their attack would also not be able to answer, especially after the fortifications they signed in the window. Of course who knows how the other 33 games of the season will go, but one thing’s for certain: they will be incredibly fun, and likely unpredictable, to watch.
It’s not every year we can say this, but this year, the Serie A title race is far from over. While Napoli has been holding on to the top spot, Juventus has been creeping up. And with Juventus having won against Lazio — on a Dybala 93rd minute goal — earlier on Saturday, the ball was in Napoli’s court when they hosted Roma later that day. And then they lost 4-2.Now, Juventus are only one point out of first, with a better goal difference and a game in hand. Napoli’s visit to Juventus in April will be one of the best, and most important, matches of the season.
What’s even left to say about this team? What’s left to say about their performances, their results? Should they be included on this list every week, or just an assumed 5th choice at all times? They had the chance to bounce back from back-to-back losses to Manchester City against a mid-table Brighton team, but instead lost 2-1. They could only manage to pull one back after going down 2. Next up, they face AC Milan in the Europa League — AC Milan, who haven’t lost their last 13 matches in all competitions. That’s a stretch dating back to right before Christmas. The Gunner’s last hope for the season might be extinguished before the next weekend comes.
