Birthdays and New Beginnings | Sick Kit Friday

Another Friday, another #SickKitFriday. Check out the sickest kits that dropped this week.

It’s another anniversary kit! This one celebrates Ligue 2 side Red Star FC and their 120th year, having been founded in 1897 as one of the founding members of Ligue 1.It’s not hard to tell that it’s an anniversary kit for Red Star, considering that “120” and “Red Star” decorate the front in huge font. Keeping the kit monochromatic in black, grey, and white makes sure that the all-red crest pops even more.

Brazilian side São Paulo released their new home kit ahead of the season’s start next month and it’s wonderful.

Although it’s very similar to last year’s home kit, subtle updates make it just that much better. Instead of the red on the collar and sleeve tips of last year, the entire kit besides the traditional stripes-and-logo combination across the midsection and striped inner collar is plain white. There’s also a new and very subtle striped design within the red and white. If the team continues doing slightly altered variations of this kit forever, we don't think anybody would complain.

The NWSL starts again on Saturday, and the teams have been slowly rolling out their designs for the new season. In quite possibly the largest departure from last year’s design, the Washington Spirit unveiled a bright kit with a half-fade, half-stripe design that alternates between shades of red. There is none of the Spirit’s usual blue in sight.

It’s such a cool design that it’s a wonder no other team has done it before! Oh wait, the Houston Dash did — just last year.

While their home kit is traditional Russian red, the new Russian women’s national team kit is a spin on the other half of the flag. It’s entirely blue, including horizontal stripes in light-and-lighter blue that complement the customary Adidas stripes; the crest is also turned entirely blue. The kit will be worn during the women’s Euros in July and August. At the very least, it’s a very summer kit!
