The past weekend was filled with the joyful title celebrations of teams across Europe like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Benfica. While players, managers, and fans were all celebrating the extreme highs of league titles and European football, just as many were suffering from the agonizing pain of relegation.
In Spain, Rayo Vallecano thought they had done all they could to avoid relegation on the final day of the season by beating Getafe, but Sporting Gijon’s win over Villarreal meant that it wasn’t enough.
You could see what the club means to manager Paco Jémez, who’s emotions were on full display at the final whistle.
Rayo has been in La Liga since the 2011 season, but will have to make do with life in the Segunda division for at least one season.
Football can be so cruel sometimes.
