Premier League Previews: Liverpool
What are you most excited about heading into the new season?
Just for the season to start again! Without it, I think every football fan has been losing time – the days and nights just blend into one. So I think just being able to watch the matches again every week.
Obviously now living in London, I try to get to the away games, like Chelsea, and last year Fulham… I’m still a bit sad about their relegation because I used to get free tickets! But I try and make as many London-based games as I can.
What worries you ahead of the new season?
I’m definitely worried about us not reaching our full potential. We had a really good season last year, although we did just fall short.
It would be horrible if we went back to finishing fourth or fifth – which I’ve seen a few people predicting. We haven’t really signed that many new players, and we fell short to City last season because of their squad depth, so that is slightly worrying.
What have you made of your club’s transfer activity this summer?
Like I said, City have just got so much squad depth, so for us to not go out and buy the players I feel like we needed… it’s seems a bit of a strange decision. But the ‘Klopp Meister’ knows what he’s doing I guess so you can’t argue with Jürgen!
What unpopular opinion do you have about your team?
I feel like van Dijk should get the captaincy. Every time I’ve watched him he’s been such a leader on the pitch. I know he gets the armband some games when Hendo’s not there, but I feel like even if they’re both on the pitch, Virgil is still more of a direct leader.
Who would win if your squad had a WWE Royal Rumble style fight?
Obviously Virgil is an absolute monster, but I’ve seen pictures of James Milner in pre-season and he’s a beast! That body… he looks like Wolverine – veins popping out and everything. I think he’d give it a good go and he’s got the stamina as well. Virgil’s an obvious choice but I love a bit of an underdog so I’m going to say Milner.
Where do you think your team will realistically finish in the Premier League?
It’s the word ‘realistically’ that gets me. If the question was just: ‘where are we going to finish?’ I’d say first, obviously.
Realistically though, with the lack of signings, I feel like we might not quite get there. I really want to say that we’re going to finally win it, but I think we’ll end up second or third.
