PSV wait on the pitch to clinch title in dramatic fashion
PSV Eindhoven clinched the Dutch league title in dramatic fashion as they waited for the result from Ajax to come through, after the final whistle had gone, on their last match on the final day of the season. PSV and Ajax had been level on points, with Ajax ahead on goal difference, meaning PSV had to better Ajax’s result on the final day to win the title. However Ajax could only muster a surprising 1-1 draw with second from bottom De Graafschap to put the title in PSV’s hands.PSV took advantage, as two Luuk de Jong goals, which sent him to over 25 goals, (the first time a PSV player has done this since Kezman back in 2002) and a goal from Jurgen Locadia gave Eindhoven a 3-1 win at mid table PEC Zwolle.Victory gave PSV, who like their title rivals lost just twice in the Eredivisie this season, their 23rd league title, but as the final whistle came, the players were not aware of the Ajax result and where the title would be heading, Amsterdam or Eindhoven. Once the news filtered through, it sparked fantastic scenes as the players sprinted to celebrate with their fans.Ajax Amsterdam’s former player and manager, Frank de Boer, was attempting to lead the club to its 34th league title, and a fifth in six seasons. However they were held by De Graafschap, who finished second from bottom and will enter the relegation play-off.
