Calcio Storico is an ancient form of football originating in Florence, Italy, which permits full contact. Things get very real.
When the modern iteration of the game first hit the Italian peninsula, it was known by its British name; football. It was only with the rise of Nationalism in Italy - spurred on by Mussolini's regime - that the modern game came to be known as Calcio.
In the 1920's and 30's it was common to hold cultural festivals across Italy in which both football and Calcio Fiorentino were played. The name Calcio has become synonymous with Italian football since this era.
This film is a favourite of ours: beautifully shot and impactful, it's a fantastic portrait of the simple brutality of this ancient sport. Watch and enjoy.
