Belgian Players react to this morning’s tragic events

The Belgian capital was thrown into chaos this morning as two explosions at the National airport and one blast at a metro station left at least 13 people dead. Since then, members of Belgium’s national squad have reacted, sending their thoughts and prayers to the victims of this terrible act. Following what transpired, Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has canceled the afternoon practice session in Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium.

The messages of solidarity tweeted out by Belgium’s players have a particular significance. This current Belgian side, is the most successful, and most international squad in the country’s history. Many of the team’s stars including Nianggolan, Lukaku, and Kompany have at least one parent from another country, so their words hold particular weight in a place where many first or second generation migrants feel disenfranchised.

With the current Belgian side at the top of the FIFA world rankings, there is little doubt that many will be looking to the first team players to call for peace.
