Hamburg Celebrate With Fans After Incredible Escape!

Last night, Hamburg managed to stay in the Bundesliga after a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win in the Relegation Play-Off against Karlsruher SC. Last night's second-leg tie between Bundesliga's 16th-place Hamburg and 2. Bundesliga's 3rd-place Karlsruher was finely balanced after the first leg 1-1 draw in which Karlsruher had the away goal. Needing to score at least one goal to have any chance of staying in the Bundesliga, Hamburg looked to be heading to the exit door as they trailed 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the match. Up steps Diaz for a last-minute free-kick for Hamburg on the edge of the opposition's penalty box, and cue the drama...

Hamburg struck in extra time, a tap-in by Müller in the 115th minute, to seal an incredibly tense and dramatic second leg, and the win extended their record 52-year Bundesliga record of never being relegated. It was an amazing finish to the Relegation Play-Off, and the significance of the occasion was not lost on the Hamburg players and fans as they both celebrated in style. It was a remarkably different scenario to earlier on in the Hamburg season when Lewis Holtby confronted the Hamburg fans who questioned his commitment to the cause. Holtby's assurance at the time that he didn't "want to be relegated with Hamburg" has now been fulfilled, and it was great to see the players and fans celebrating together.
