Stars turnout for Gerrard XI vs Carragher XI Charity match.

Premier League legends came together at Anfield on Sunday to take part in a charity match between two all-star teams captained by Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. In what was a relatively quiet weekend for English football during the international break, football fans were treated to a star-studded spectacle at Liverpool’s home ground which involved Premier League greats such as Thierry Henry, John Terry and Didier Drogba.

The spectacle more than lived up to the fans’ expectations, with numerous moments of magic on the pitch keeping everyone entertained. Liverpool fans in particular were overjoyed to see the return of some of their revered former servants, with Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres prompting the most applause and noise when they came on at half time.

Balotelli opened the scoring with a spectacular effort from 25 yards and, after Drogba doubled Carragher’s side’s lead, Gerrard equalised from the spot twice.

Another highlight came when Henry displayed his typically classy feet, as he cheekily pretended to shoot and instead passed to Ryan Babel.

It was a joyous afternoon to reflect on the past successes and prolific chapters that so many of the returning players brought to the club and to the Premier League, and boy were they successful; Xabi Alonso, John Terry and Thierry Henry between them have numerous domestic and European titles.

But the footballers, and indeed the football, was secondary to the match’s main purpose. Having organised this match for several charities, Gerrard and Carragher hoped to garner as much support as possible for charities with the help of current and former Premier League colleagues. It was a total success; a sell-out crowd witnessed a 2-2 draw between two sides replete with true greats of the game. As you can see in the following video, the players enjoyed it too..
