Vietnam Northampton Town Pho Appeal
Article by Michael Bones
If you asked any Football fan to describe the periodic, gloomy moments inevitably experienced supporting a lower league club, they may describe it as challenging, frustrating, even infuriating. When your Football team is Northampton Town, these words don't even come close.
Northampton Town Football Club are at the brink of extinction. With a winding-up petition from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs drawing ever closer, it is now up to the Supporters Trust of the club to raise awareness and plead with the Football community to dig deep into the pockets and part with whatever spare coin they may have.
The vital funds, to be controlled by the trust, may be used for negotiating with a potential new owner, administrators or at the worst, the establishment of a Phoenix Club.
Whilst my fellow fans were hard at work in order to raise as much money as possible, I was observing from afar - Vietnam to be precise, feeling helpless and ever guilty that I wasn't doing enough to try and prolong the life of my beloved club.
For many days I contemplated how I could possibly help from 6,000 miles away, until I was finally able to remove the blinkers directing me towards the Football community and instead look at the country I now inhabit.
According to the most recent statistics, the average salary of a Vietnamese national is 94 GBP a month. The majority of whom work 6-7 days a week, in very poor working conditions whom rely on very basic foods such as white rice and vegetables in order to live as comfortably as possible for them and their families.
One of Vietnam’s most famous dishes, ‘Phở’ (pronounced ‘fur’) is a signature, noodle soup dish which everyone in the country eats and loves. The short campaign I have now decided to run is called ‘Food Phở Three’. For every £3 donation given to the supporters trust, labelled ‘Pho for three’ in the description, I will handout a bowl of Pho to someone in need.
The campaign will run until 6pm GMT, Thursday the 12th of November 2015. I will then hand out the bowls of Phở donated between Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of November 2015.After the deadline has passed, I will compile a list of the names of the people who have donated and hand out a bowl of Phở with their name written on it as a gift. I will document the donation with many pictures to show where and who the gift went to and share them to my ‘Food Pho Three’ Facebook page.
I strongly believe this is a fund-raising campaign which those in and out of the football community should want to be a part of. Vietnam is a fascinating country with such lovely, kind people. A simple donation of a bowl of Noodle soup will really brighten a person’s day, whilst supporting an historic and storied part of Northampton Town.
To date, I have raised 1000 and 333 bowls of Pho for those in need.
If you would like to donate, I urge you to visit Justgiving. Ensure to include 'Food Pho Three' and feel satisfied you have done your part to feed the bellies of those in need in Vietnam.
